black + friday = destruction

What if we took everything we are buying this black Friday for people we love and gave it away to people we don’t know to show them that we have love? The Bible talks about how we love Jesus as much as we love the least person. It’s easy to shop for the people we know and value in our lives. But what if we shopped for people who have held no value, not only in our lives, but also in society’s?

It’s also easy to go through our closets and find left over things and stuff we don’t use anymore and give it away. Jesus said that whatever we do to the least we’ve done it unto Him. It’s giving Jesus the left overs of our house. So suddenly the King of the universe is only good enough for our left overs instead of our best? We don’t do much shopping for Jesus, do we?

I read in Galatians 6 that what we sow we will eventually reap. Not only that, but those who sow to the flesh will reap corruption. Black Friday sows to our flesh, doesn’t it? The fabulous deals that we get on stuff and give to our family and friends, the stuff we’ve stayed up all night to get in ridiculous long lines end up getting taken back. When they get taken back, it seems as though the lines are so much longer and barely move. And the relationships that we thought we were building feels like they’ve been crushed because we put a lot of time and effort into shopping for some heart-felt gift. They refuse it, we take it back, and everyone is upset because we were selfish, they were selfish, and no one was any happier. Destruction.

Again, what if we changed our reason for shopping for the season? What if we bought our stuff for people who would love to get something new because they’ve never gotten anything new before in their lives? Crazy thought…
